Residents of Mountain View Park in Mancos are taking an important step toward housing stability and resident ownership.
The 31-space mobile home community is currently under contract to be purchased by its residents, who have formed Mountain View Cooperative Inc., a not-for-profit cooperative. If successful, the purchase would make Mountain View Park the first resident-owned mobile home park in Montezuma County, according to The Journal.
The residents’ goal is to create long-term housing stability by keeping rents tied to the community’s actual operating costs rather than generating profit for an outside park owner. Residents also plan to make community improvements, including road repairs, and establish their own community rules.
MHP Network is proud to support this effort
The Mountain View Cooperative is working with Thistle ROC to navigate the transaction and has also received guidance from MHP Network, drawing on the experience of residents who have successfully purchased their own mobile home parks in Durango.
Resident ownership is a powerful tool for preserving affordable housing and giving communities greater control over their future. The Mountain View residents’ effort demonstrates what can happen when residents come together to protect their homes and build long-term stability for their community.
